Division P Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest - 5 September 2009

The Div P Humorous Speech & Evaluation contest ended with a blast. I must say that the Organising Chair, Sabariah with the help from ExxonMobil did a fantastic job organising the event. The room was packed and there weren't just enough chairs to accomodate the overflowing attendees.

The Division contest last Saturday saw 5 contestants for the Humorous contest, and another 7 for the Evaluation contest. They were Ahmad Salahuddin (MIM KL/Area P1), Mark Pui (PWC/Area P3), Mas Rizal A Rahim (TMIKL/Area P4), Kumar Tharumalingam (Tiger/Area P2) and Shazi Sultan who was actually the only female Humorous contestant this time around.

For the Evaluation contest, again we had Ahmad Salahuddin (MIM KL/Area P1), K Gobinath (Telekom/Area P1), Sirajudeen Abu Haniffa (CPA KL/Area P2), Vanitha Rangganathan (Ambank/Area P2), Terrence Stanley Dass (Melia/Area P3), Ivan Cheng (ITC Bintang/Area P4) and my very own club member, Mardhiyah M Bakir (DDYPC/Area P4).

The result were as follows:

Humorous Contest

WINNER - Kumar Tharumalingam (Tiger TMC/Area P2)

1st Runner Up – Mas Rizal A Rahim (TMIKL/Area P4)

2nd Runner Up - Ahmad Salahuddin Ahmad Fakhri (MIM KL/Area P1)

Evaluation Contest

WINNER - Sirajudeen Abu Haniffa (CPA KL/Area P2)

1st Runner Up - Ahmad Salahuddin Ahmad Fakhri (MIM KL/Area P1)

2nd Runner Up – Ivan Cheng (ITC Bintang/Area P4)

We even had a lovely surprise from the District
Governor himself, who managed to come to the contest with the TLI chair, Sandra. THank you!

Congratulations winners, and all contestants!

The audiences eager to hear the result of the contest.

And drum roll please.........

Eagerly awaiting the result of the Evaluation contest are our District Governor and the lovely Division Governor.

Contest Chair, Hakim Hamzah announcing the result. Gulp..

The 2nd Runner Up - Ivan Cheng!
Congratulations from members of Area P4!

Ahmad Salahuddin was our double winner. His POWER evaluation won him second on the
Evaluation contest, and his long title speech may have
well earn him points from the judges :D. He was third in the Humorous Speech Contest.

Our very own Div P winner - Sirajudeen. Besides getting the trophy and certificates all the way
from US (which our lovely Div Gov had to pick up all the way from KLIA), he also earn himself a free RM430 Annual convention ticket to Genting! Do us proud.
Wait, there's more. Odyssey Bus Line is sponsoring 2 return ticket to Singapore. How great is that!

AND THE RESULT FOR THE HUMOROUS SPEECH CONTEST WERE:
Our sole representative at the Humorous Speech contest - Mas Rizal of TMIKL was first RUnner Up. If only Daniel was around to see his dad's speech, I'm sure he would be equally proud as we were!

ANd yes, our winner! Kumar Tharumalingam from Exxon Mobil (caution: just because Exxon sponsore the venue, there was no such biasness!). This guy had us laughing from the very start. Indeed a great speaker. Congratulations, and fly the flag high!
And yes, as the winner, he will also get the convention ticket and the BUS TICKET to Singapore courtesy of Odyssey!

If you missed the fun, don't worry. We will bring the contest to your home, by providing you the dvd of the whole contest! Its up for grab for only RM15!

Organising Chair, Sabariah wrapping up. A job well done!

The Area Governors, Choi San and Hakim Hamzah

Message from our beloved District Governor, Ritchie. 2 minutes on the clock, and he did quite well considering its an impromptu speech. I was quite impressed with the statistics that he produced on Division P.

Ritchie, you should be an Engineer instead!

The much-awaited dialogue session, where some members did have some very good ideas for us to execute.

ANd yes, THE wrap up picture. Area P4 members capturing the winning moment with our very own winners for the Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest. Congratulations!

(btw, this post is so haywired in the blog. Not sure whether I can fix this!)

Division P TLI #1 @ Stamford College

While the world still mourns the sudden death of Michael Jackson (and emmm... you remember Farah Fawcett?), Division P decided to carry on still with the TLI #1 training. The event was held yesterday, Saturday 4th July 09 at the much-appreciated Stamford College as the sponsor for the venue.

Though both the District Governor and the TLI Chair are not able to join us due to work commitment, they still left us messages passed through the LGET. DG Ritchie in his note, mentioned about the dedication for excellence through individualism.
*But let me get this opportunity to congratulate the DG Governor, Ritchie and LGET, Thanni for recently achieving DTM and ACB respectively! It was indeed a great start to a wonderful year ahead for both of you, and US as well!

I was put in charge of Registration with a new-toastmaster, Gerard who seems very excited about his very first exposure to toastmaster. There were about 130 toastmasters who attended, a good number for us to manage throughout the day.

We started off with the Welcoming Speech by our Beloved Division P Governor, Dr Caren Lee who successfully launched our Division P blogspot and facebook, followed by a brief Ice Breaking handled by TLI.
LGET Thannimalai

Next was the Distinguished Club Programs presented by LGET, ACB Thannimalai who flew all the way from Penang and were given a 'not-so-friendly-tour' by the taxi driver before arriving on time to the venue. When he asked the members about the vision of toastmaster, one very active members who happens to be the President of Semarak TMC volunteered to recite the vision which he has memorised. I was simply stunned, cause this indeed describe the level of commitment he has on toastmaster. Well, do you know what the mision of a toastmaster club?

Ok, i cheated. I had to googled this up: "The mission of a Toastmasters Club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth".
Then, the excos were asked to break into groups based on their club respective positions. As the Past-VPPR, i was asked to coach the VPPR of the respective clubs and share with them my experiences as the VPPR of DDYPC. I've also managed to slot in some best practices that i've seen in other clubs i've attended and keep reminding the participants that as VPPR, we are the brand of the clubs! But it's true isn't it? VPPR does all the Public Relations work and we are the one heavily tasked to visit other clubs and promote our very own clubs, so however we portrayed ourselves, that is how people would see the club that we represent. Maybe i'll do a more detail write up about this soon.

The 1 hour session seemed just nice for the sharing session with some very good questions from the participants, but who can deter themselves from the sumptous mihun goreng & pisang tea-break that awaits us.

When we started again at about 430 pm, there were 3 electives to choose from. NK Valli is the facilitator for the Motivating Achievement session, DTM Sum Chee for the Competent Leadership session and DTM Dr Arul for the High Performance Leadership session. I decided to join the Motivating Achievement session as 3 of my club members are already attending the CL session, and HPL is something i'm already doing. So perhaps, we could just swap notes later and perhaps, i could just get the personal tutoring from Sum Chee about CL.

When we came back to the auditorium, DTM Francis was waiting to talk about Membership. His excitement and dedication is indeed a great asset to Toastmaster, as throughout the year, Francis is able to sponsor more clubs and attract more toastmaster members than any other Toastmasters i've known. At the end of the session, we had very interesting questions for the District Council Members (whom have pledged 24/7 availability for toastmasters).
Two announcements were made at the end -
  • ACB Hadzrin (AG W2) - Come for the Papa Gerald and Siva's workshop. A session not to be missed by all!
  • DTM Azmi - Toastmaster Convention coming up pretty soon, and KUALA LUMPUR is the host! It will be our very last semi-annual convention, so why dont we fill up the seats in Genting and use this opportunity to meet up more exciting toastmasters (or the way he puts it, if you are single, hey, why not meet other singles as well :p)?
Thank you Division P for a wonderful session. To those who have missed this session, dont forget to sign up for Div B training next week 11 July in Segi College. Earn the 1/2 points for your clubs (or none if you missed this last training).
Till some other time....

Myself with the Div P Governor

Attendees: Stef (DDYPC), Kuok Sum (TTDI), Hadzrin (Kelab Pidato), Syidi (AMbank), Ivan (DDYPC), Sum Chee (Telekom)

DDYPC/IEM/ITC Bintang/MID/TMIKL/TTDI Joint Installation

Happy Faces of the Organising Committee of the Joint Installation Event

Date: 28 Jun 2009

Venue: Restoran Nelayan, Tasik Titiwangsa

It was an excellent installation event last Sunday, in the company of 6 reputable Toastmaster Clubs: DDYPC, IEM, ITC Bintang, MID, TMIKL and TTDI.

The event was graced by the presence of the outgoing Div P Governor, Professor Dato’ Dr Wan Zin as well as the Incoming Div P Governor Dr Caren Lee. DTM Azmi Shahrin, DTM Sum Chee and a few other notable Area Governors are also among the 74 attendees present on the day.

Prof Wan in his Welcoming Remarks proudly acknowledge the fact that Division P was the first Division to gain the Distinguished Division status, and then carried on to become the third to accomplish the President Distinguished Division in District 51. This achievement was much credited to his dedication to serve and the strong team that supported him.

As the Organising Chair and the Area Governor for P4, I took the opportunity to become the Installing Officer for the event. I started off feeling nervous as it was my very first experience installing a club, but hey, what better way than to do 6 at a time!

We wrapped up the installation with a 2 minutes speech given by the President from the 6 respective clubs. TM Stefanie Khaw from DDYPC (Distinguished Club) mentioned in her speech that her sole intention of joining toastmaster club to meet new friends has indeed blossom to more than just fellow Petronas collegue, but well extended to outside the circle. TM Ismail Omar from IEM (President Distinguished Club) may be a junior toastmaster, but his vast experience has well been a major leadership boost for him to take up office as Area Governor and to continue on as the President for the coming term.

TM Victor from ITC Bintang (Select Distinguished Club) then shared his club’s vision with the audience, which is to start strong this year very much alike to the club’s name of Bintang: “Where everyone sparkles”. TM Izaitul Farah from MID was up next sharing the club’s toastmaster experience and how it has helped her and her club members.

TMIKL President-elect, TM Mas Rizal was up next seeking the support from fellow toastmasters to support the club and invited them to celebrate the 31 years TMIKL has been in existence. 9 years President Distinguished Club, TTDI has a big role to play with it’s 10th President, TM Kuok Sum. He was presented with a challenge to not just achieve President Distinguished Club, but with the shortest possible time this year targeted to achieve the goal.

The speeches were great, and food served next was just as marvelous.

TM Chau Fong and TM Xi Wen then took the stage as the games coordinator and invited all the clubs to a Toastmaster Idol contest. With the 3 appointed judges being myself, Prof Wan and Dr Caren as the very version of Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson, the audiences were entertained with the quick table-topic-pantomime from all the 6 clubs. TTDI with its creative pasar-borong act out was crowned the winner. It was a tough fight to determine the winners between DDYPC with their creative interpretation of the brawl between the MIB TMC and Lady in Pink TMC to attract potential members for their club (and the hybrid alien toastmasters) against IEM with the 2-guys-trying to win a girl’s heart-act with the latter eventually announced the First Runner Up.

Later on, 6 of the best dressed participants on the day were challenged to an-act out to be crowned the King & Queen of our Joint Installation event. The eventual winner, TM Azlan Mohaideen from DDYPC wowed the crowd into his very own rendition of Michael Jackson Beat It! His energy was simply irresistible and a crowd pleaser indeed.

In her closing remark, Dr Caren thanked the organizing committee for the wonderful effort hosting the event, and shared with the attendees a challenge posed by the current Division Governor (who also happens to be her Chemical Engineering lecturer) to achieve President Distinguished Division within 8 months!

But hey, the fun was not yet over. The crowds were entertained with another round of makarena specially brought by TMIKL.

Wait…

We have more! Those who still felt the heat of more fun went straight to Raintree Club next, for a karaoke session sponsored by Ismail Omar from IEM. Many talented singers tag along proving that toastmasters don’t just excel in public speaking but in ‘voice variation’ as well.

Overall, a job well done indeed. Thank you all who came, and for those who didn’t hmmm… there’s always next time :D. See you at our P4 Area Contest in August!

DDYPC TMC Election - Office Bearers 2009/10

They say leaders are not born overnight, but I beg to differ. Election does just that!

DDYPC TMC held its election on 21st May to choose the 7 officers to take up the stewardship of DDYPC cum this 1 July 2009. It was a tough contest as all the seats had at least 3 nominations to the post, and at times, the members were asked to re-vote as they could not reach a majority consensus.

It gets more interesting as the members also had the opportunity to listen to the nominees’ quick 2-minutes speech, and their eagerness to serve the members.

Alas, we are proud to bring you the new club officers, as follows:

President: Stefanie Khaw Sui Lynn (PED/ PEC)
VP of Education: Tunku Indra b Tunku A Mutalib (PMU/ PRD)
VP of Membership: Ivan Pei Lai Hung (XD/XPG)
VP of Public Relations: Azlan Mohaideen (DD/ DPG)
Treasurer: Khairul Fadhli b A Kassim (PMU/ POM)
Secretary M Muaz Azman (DD/DFE)
Sargeant-At-Arms Mardhiyah bt M Bakir (R&T)

Congratulations all.

We can all expect a great year ahead of us with these credible people to lead! Our big THANK YOU to the outgoing committee for your effort and hard work to ensure the club’s success. It was not easy to become a charter committee, but all of the officers have done well in building up the momentum of the club.

But all the hard work would not have paid off without the support from the members. YOU can make it happen! Let’s strive towards achieving a SELECT Distinguished Club this year, and a PRESIDENT Distinguished Club the year ahead!

Kuching 2009 Toastmaster Convention

The Kuching convention was definitely a big success!

Myself (Suhana Sidik) and Azlan Mohaideen (the beloved President) were the only two representatives from DDYPC to the District 51 Annual Convention which officially ended today in Kuching. The three days convention starting from 17 August were held in Riverside Majestic Kuching with about 500 toastmasters from all over Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia attending the glorious event.

The annual event which was hosted by Azam Toastmaster is held with the theme ‘Act to Inspire and Motivate’. The event line up includes the International Speech and Table Topic contest for all the Divisional winners, as well as the anticipated inspirational session by the MAS CEO, Datuk Seri Idris Jala.

The event kicked off on Friday for the District Council meeting with the ultimate objective of choosing the 2009/10 District Council members. There was a tough fight for the Lieutenant General of Marketing (LGM) post which was conquered by Francis Ng, DTM who undoubtedly delivered the most forceful 2 minutes speech for the election. Our Division P also saw the contest of two strong candidates, Dr Carren Lee from Premier Advanced TMC and Ron Low Chye Seng from the Ukay TMC. Ron, who was nominated by the floor did not managed to surpass the enormous votes already received by Dr Carren Lee who has executed an excellent election campaign leading up to the District Council meeting. The line up for the top District posts are as follows:
  • District Governor (DG) – Richard R Chong (Mas Mawar TMC)
  • Lieutenant General of Education & Training (LGET) – Thannimalai Letchuman (YMCA TMC)
  • Lieutenant General of Education & Training (LGET) D51 Rest – Mohamad Ariff Irwani (Azam TMC)
  • Lieutenant General of Marketing (LGM) – Francis Ng (Money Mastery TMC)
  • Lieutenant General of Marketing (LGM) D51 Rest – Mien Soenari (The Catalyst TMC)

But you must also be wondering who the new lineups are for the Division Area Governors, right! Let’s congratulate these toastmasters:

  • Area Governor P1 – Hakim Hamzah
  • Area Governor P2 - Sabariah
  • Area Governor P3 – Choi San
  • Area Governor P4 – Suhana Sidik (yes, yours truly)
For your info, DDYPC is under Area P4. So yes, we can expect wonderful result after this :D).
Later on that night, we were then entertained by the Convention Welcoming Dinner with the presence of Azam CEO, Datuk Aloysous, which also included the welcoming dance by the local dances from Petra, who were dressed in a cat(@Kucing) suit. The participants were then pulled to join them to dance to the tune of Pocho-Pocho at the end of the dinner.

The next day (Saturday) was the Run Off for both the table topic and speech contest. With the large no of divisions in the district (District 51 is currently the largest district in the world!), the contest were broken into 2 groups of semi finals. The Division P representative, Ahmad Fakhri Hamzah who was competing in both the Table Topic and Speech Contest had delivered exceptional quality of speeches, but lost out to even better speakers from other division! These were the quality that had both myself and Azlan at awe.

The afternoon did not just end there. Three Educational Sessions were organized with topics on the Aristotle famous ‘Three Musketeer’ in Public Speaking delivered by Prof Zaharom Naim from USM, followed by the ‘The Four Lesson for Success’ by Past D-51 District Governer, Datuk Adeleen DTM.

The Installation Dinner held that night was also an excellent Education Session by itself, with the inclusion of a 70 minutes sharing session given by Datuk Seri Idris Jala, a name who has made headlines over the past 2 years. He has managed to overturn MAS from the brink of a USD400 Million debt to generating profit of over USD 200 Million in less than one year! The Sarawakian felt at ease speaking at his hometown, that he was willing to share 6 of his successful business transformation which formulated the MAS success. The secret that he shared was:

  1. Game of the Impossible
  2. P&L Anchorage
  3. Discipline of Action
  4. Situational Leadership
  5. Winning Coalition (Does this VERY sound familiar to the PETRONAS folks?)
  6. Divine Intervention
Interested to know more? Come and talk to either myself or Azlan to find out more :D

The dinner ended with the installation of the new District Officers, and the presentation of the 24 clubs who managed to achieve President Distinguished Club as at 10 April. Indeed, this will be DDYPC’s ultimate goal to achieve!

The next day (Sunday aka today) was the highlight of the whole conference itself. The participants were entertained with wonderful speeches given by the top three winners emerging from the Run Off held the day before. The quality had indeed improved with the speakers seemed rather more confident than the day before, and it was even tougher to narrow down our selections for our Top picks of the day.

However, the winners were as follows:

D51 TABLE TOPIC WINNERS

  • Champion: Palaniappa Subramanian (Silterra TMC, Division N)
  • 1st Runner-up: Mary Barton (WIM TMC, Division W)
  • 2nd Runner-up: Jeremy Teo (Nilai University Club, Division C)

D51 INTERNATIONAL SPEECH WINNERS

  • Champion: Ong Swee Keat (Bayan Baru TMC, Division N)
  • 1st Runner-up: Stephen Fernando (Hilton Petaling Jaya TMC, Division C)
  • 2nd Runner-up: Saw Chin Bin (Penang Advanced TMC, Division S)
Some of the speakers had us laughing all the way throughout their speech while there are those who had us at tears with their story. One particular speaker, Saw Chin Bin started off with lots of humor injected to his speech before revealing to the participants about the recent death of his wife. In the end when asked about how he copes with the losing, his answer was simply the very last word that his wife uttered, ‘Move On …. I have’. Overall, district 51 is blessed with wonderful spakers indeed!

I am sure you would want to see all the speeches given by the speakers, so no worries! We will bring Kuching to you. A DVD copy of the 3 days event will be made available to participants who want to bring it back as souvenir and yes indeed, we have purchased one for that very reason. There’s a lot that we want to share with all of you, and you can indeed relate more when you watch the videos.

Right now, we are on the way back to Kuala Lumpur on a delayed Air Asia flight (I wonder whether Idris Jala is sending us a message here) with a bunch of other toastmasters who are taking the same flight with us. We made new friends, and have learn a lot from this very first Toastmaster conference. Indeed we are looking forward for the next Semi-Annual Convention which will be held in Genting Highland, and to be hosted by MAS Mawar TMC. Probably a good opportunity for you guys to come and join us, and start preparing yourself to contest for a humor speech! Yes, the Genting convention will host both the Humor Speech Contest as well as the Evaluation Contest. Probably this time, we will fly the DDYPC flag high …

Until later…10.59 pm, 1 more hour to destination.

(Picture of the Lutong TMC who will be holding their 2010 convention next year in Miri. Hurry, come and book your slot and it's a guaranteed to change your life)

DDYPC TMC Installation Event

On the 8th of January, 2009, the Development Division Young Professional’s Toastmasters Club launched its first ever Installation Ceremony on the 40th floor of PETRONAS Twin Towers 1. To showcase the achievements of its current members and normal flow of events of a typical toastmaster session to the higher management and guests, a demo meeting was held prior to the ceremony to demonstrate.

Gracing the event with their distinguished presence were En. Azhar Noordin, Senior Manager of Development Division, En. Kamal Bahrin Ahmad, upcoming Senior General Manager of Development Division and several members of DD Management Committee. We also had the privilege of receiving other external guests such as Datuk Dr. Prof. Wan Zin, Toastmaster International (TMI) Division P Governer, TM Hakim Hamzah, mentors of DDYPC TMC from MCOBA Toastmaster Club (TMC), as well as toastmasters from surrounding areas such as MIM KL TMC, TMIKL TMC, Semarak TMC, Bintang ITC TMC and the first Malay Toastmasters Club from Pidato Perdana.

Representatives from various PETRONAS Operating Unit (OPU)’s Young Professional Club such as HYPE from Group Human Resource, NEXC from Exploration Division PCSB, EXCITE from PMU as well as its very own members from DDYPC PCSB were also present to show support for the first Installation event.

At 12.15pm, Toastmaster of the day, Tunku Indra, called the meeting to order, thanking all who were present for their generosity in accommodating this ceremony in their hectic schedules to attend this event.

Mas Rizal, Table Topics Master of the day, then gave everyone present a taste of giving a spontaneous speech, testing the wits and integrity of those who were brave enough to volunteer for a 2-minute speech on a topic disclosed only on the spot. The audience was entertained by Khairul Fadhli’s recollection and elaboration on the causes of road accidents, impressed by Nurashida’s opinions on the importance of words instead of actions, and sharing Farid Wahid’s strong support for the Manchester United team.

Siti Aishah, from Petroleum Engineering Department, a loyal member of DDYPC TMC, then gave her 2nd project speech entitled “Chocolate Heaven”. This confident engineer not only educated all present on the health benefits of chocolate consumption but also surprised some lucky souls with several bars of Cadbury chocolates.

Suhana Sidik, Competent Communicator (CC),
the 1st runner up for Area P4
Humorous Speech Contest in November 2008, then gave a demo speech entitled “Thank You”. Her aptly opening remarks, by firing up our pride in the achievements and success stories of our nation certainly caught the attention of everyone present. Gently steering into the topic of Malaysian courtesy, conducting a short self-evaluation, she ended her speech by reminding us to be true to our roots by practicing common courtesy at all times, just by a simple word of ‘thank you’.

TM Ahmad Salahuddin, champion of the Area P4 Humorous Speech Contest in November 2008, then embarked on this demonstration speech on 3 tips to keeping a marriage alive. Successfully injecting anecdotes, analogies and jokes in unexpected areas of his speech won him a strong round of applause from the floor whose funny bones were tickled ‘til no end from the moment he began, at the same time absorbing what he imparted with knowing smiles.

The demonstration session was then ended by TM Ahmad Fakhri, who gave an evaluation on TM Siti Aishah’s speech and commended her on her excellent element of surprise, which surpassed her speech objective, indicating her enthusiasm to excel in the area of public speaking.

The airing of a documentary video on the role play of a normal Toastmasters meeting and the major breakthrough one undergoes upon becoming a member then preceded the Installation Ceremony of the year 2008/2009 Office Bearers of DDYPC Toastmasters Club.

As Datuk Prof. Dr. Wan Zin officiated the installation of the officers by stating the duties and responsibilities of each office bearer, the incumbents proudly declared ‘I will’ and passed on the gavel from the Sergeant-at-Arms , Vice-Presidents and finally to the President. En. Azlan Mohaideen, President of DDYPC TMC thanked all present and stated his action plan and mission for the club. Tokens of appreciation were subsequently presented to the club mentors, sponsors and high achievers of the club.

At the end of the ceremony, En. Azhar Noordin, gave a closing speech and strongly reiterated his vision to see this club growing into a strong organization, which would build up the courage and spontaneity of PETRONAS employees, indirectly fulfilling the organization’s business needs and the individuals’, especially during negotiation with local hosts government internationally on all business dealings.

At 2.00pm, all present were then invited for a photo session at the hanging bridge of Level 42 to mark the beginning of the development of prominent individuals and a reminder of the strong community of support for this young club within the vicinity of Kuala Lumpur.

With continuous support from all levels, DDYPC TMC will strive to bring out the best in its members, spark enthusiasm in improving public speaking skills and take charge in inspiring desires to change for the better to face the challenging times ahead.

Therefore, let us all join a Toastmasters Club today. After all, nothing ventured, nothing gained. You have nothing lose, but everything to gain. Come and experience it for yourself and you will see the difference!
